The HTC HD2 is a sequel to the HTC Touch HD. The major features of the HTC HD2 are similar to its previous model but only with a few minor changes. If you don’t have an unlocked dev phone G1, you’re going to have to wait a few weeks to get Donut running on your machine. The ROM is hard to find and it doesn’t work for rooted G1 owners. Fortunately, the fact that Donut is already out among the developer community means it shouldn’t be too long before a version is out that the rest of us can use.

And what can we expect from this update to Android’s UI? For one thing, Android now handles playing and storing music files a lot better. The playlist interface has improved dramatically, and there’s now a shortcut to the media player right under the google search bar on the Android desktop. The Internet browser, the calendar, and a whole host of other bits of the Android UI have received significant updates.

 an Android dev named Haykuro managed to get a hold of a ROM of the new version of Android for the HTC Hero. Now, thanks to another developer, we’ve got a video of the leaked build that shows us the widget functionality we can expect out of the upcoming Hero and probably G1.2 as well.

It gives us a pretty good look at how the the latest version of Android will perform, at least on the Hero. I have to say, I am highly impressed. For one thing, the new widgets look great. They’re all well-designed and you can tell at a glance exactly what information they have for you.

The new Android UI starts off as very bare-bones, but by filling your home screen up with widgets you turn it into a glittering utopia of pretty gadgets. Just from this video, we can see an excellent-looking Twitter feed, a bookmark section, a great little weather tool, a scrolling contact list with contact photos, and a music player.

With all of those on, the UI gets pretty filled up, but never crowded. Just like in the current Android build, you can slide left or right to give yourself more space, and access the rest of your programs. Honestly, it looks to me like Android’s gotten even easier to use. It really is a great little touch screen UI, and HTC is taking advantage of Android’s strengths with this new ‘donut’ build.

Those of you that look at the iconic Android clock on your T-Mobile G1 or the HTC Magic and think: ‘that’s so 2008′, get ready to pick up the uber-skinned HTC Hero ROM instead.

The clever chaps over at the XDA developers forum have managed to put together a working port that makes your current, bog-standard Android device into a next generation behemoth.

Well, that is until the HTC Hero actually hits the shops in the not-too-distant-future, complete with super widget gallery and some kind of space-age buttons that might make you feel like you’re aboard some intergalactic space ship. Or not, your call.

The only problem is you’ll need to be a pretty clued-up developer / code wrangler to get this thing on your phone – we’re talking flashing the device, connecting up the debugger, the works.

The HTC Touch was the first real competition the iPhone faced, even if it didn’t necessarily set out to be. HTC was surely trying to capitalize on the popularity of Apple’s all-touch device, but Windows Mobile is a more open though much clunkier UI than OS X, and ultimately the devices were really in a different class. Sure, TouchFLO gave a finger-friendly skin to the Touch, but in reality the iPhone was built from the ground-up as a consumer friendly, media-oriented device whereas the Touch was a Windows Mobile business device that happened to lose the keyboard and get some fancy software. Don’t get us wrong, we loved the Touch, but it just wasn’t iPhone material.

Now comes the second generation, dubbed the Touch Diamond, and it’s obvious that HTC is ready to take on the iPhone properly this time around. More elaborate Description of the phone

The HTC Touch HD is claimed to be the best smartphone in the market today and one of the iPhone 3G killer. HTC has announced the official release date of November 6th, 2008. As a reminder, the HTC Touch HD measures 11.5cm x 6.3cm x 1.2cm and weights at 146 grams. The handset features a 3.8 inch screen, a 5MP camera with autofocus, TouchFLO 3D interface, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD/SDHC storage, integrated GPS/AGPS and sports Quad Band GSM and WCDMA/HSDPA.

 The Touch HD took the industry by surprise back at the beginning of September when some leaked pictures and very few details showed up on various Internet tech sites, but one thing was for sure, the screen was looking very special indeed.  When HTC confirmed the release of the Touch HD just over a week afterwards, we had our hopes confirmed too; it would feature a WVGA 480×800 screen!

OK, so it may not be true high definition resolution, but in mobile phone terms, this was a huge step forward, especially as the all-important 800 pixel width is perfect for viewing many websites in landscape mode.  The massive 3.8″ screen size is important too, as it beats not only the majority of its competitors but retains the same overall footprint too, including that of the Apple iPhone 3G.

The super-clear screen displays the latest TouchFLO 3D software from HTC, which overlays their currently preferred Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system.  The TouchFLO 3D system works by scrolling a bar with your finger to access major functions from the Home screen in an attempt to hide Windows Mobile as much as possible.  HTC have even bundled the Opera Mini browser in order to avoid the need to use Internet Explorer.

Unlike previous Touch handsets, the Touch HD contains all the major functions of a top range modern smart phone.  It’s a 3G mobile with HSDPA support and Wi-Fi connectivity, there’s built-in GPS with Google Maps, a 5 megapixel camera with selectable autofocus, FM RDS radio, MP3, YouTube and video player plus a 3.5mm jack plug for your own headphones.

The touchscreen smart phone market is getting very crowded and despite the Touch HD’s amazing screen, it’s still going to have some tough competition.  If you aren’t an iPhone 3G fan, then the Samsung Omnia is one of the most complete packages available and a superb choice, while the LG Renoir KC910 boasts an 8 megapixel camera but no 3.5mm jack plug.  Nokia haven’t embraced the touchscreen as yet, but you would be wise to check out both the N85 and N96 before the purchase of any smart phone today.  It’s not going to be an easy decision, but it’ll certainly be a fun one!
